The first time I ever went to karaoke, there were a couple of really good singers there. I thought that they were "ringers" brought in by the host to make the rest of us think that we actually had a chance. I've found out since that this is not the case, and there are in fact amateur singers out there who just show up.
(Why is she telling me this?)
I'm new to my gym, and I'm convinced that there are hardbodies planted there specifically to make me look weak and jiggly. The gym "ringers." Just like at karaoke, I'm sure that in time, I will figure out on a visceral level that these people are not there to make me feel bad. It's not all about me, I keep telling myself. These people are just there to maintain their physique, not to take away my hope. Just like karaoke. I see the ringers singing, and I think, "with some practice, I can do that." Next time I see that ripped woman on the stairmaster on level 77 without so much as a bead of sweat on her brow, I will think "with some practice, I can do that."
Here's hoping.
